Twenty Twenty Two was a commission I did for someone special to me.
They had experienced a great deal of loss, and trauma for much of 2022. Their indomitable spirit, and strength to pull through such a painful time was humbling. I admire this person, I respect this person and it was imperative that I captured their experiences in this painting. I felt incredibly honored to recieve their request for this painting, and I knew it had to be as close to perfect as I could get.
Twenty Twenty Two expresses the many layers to this person's story. Colors were chosen with purpose, lines and brushstrokes were woven with intention. I worked with 3's as that is a significant number to this person and story. This painting took time, thought, and energy. I went back and referenced my notes, and about halfway I questioned my ability to get the entire story onto one canvas, while still remaining true to the vision.
So I began Way Out, and started working on the 2 paintings simultaneously.
Way Out became the ending. The size of the door or window speaks to this person resilience and strength. There is a hopefulness, and lightness to this one. I continued to use 3's, red, blue, grey and white, however with Way Out I used far more red.
My anxious hope was that perhaps 1 of the paintings would resonate with them. So I took photos and sent them for approval, and nervously waited for a response.
" I can't stop looking at them! I love them both"
You cannot imagine how good this made me feel. I got it! I captured the essence, I moved this person, I created not 1 but 2 paintings that they love, what an incredible gift.
Each painting I create has a story. Whether it's someone else's story that I'm fusing into the canvas, or my own experiences and insights; there are fragments of life in each one.
I am so grateful for the opportunity to paint these stories, and I look forward to the next one.
